The problem of Nairobi River pollution due to the effluents from the four slaughterhouses in Nairobi’s Dagoretti division to the UNIDO partnership to suggest appropriate technology options for tackling this pollution menace, in view of the problem being compounded by the existence of slums in the neighbor-hood. Energy recovery from solid and liquid wastes in an integrated fashion was suggested to see that part of the energy produced is applied locally for the needs of these abattoirs and for improving the life of the people around, through the use of latest innovative technologies of waste to energy. A comprehensive study by Prof.V.K.Damodaran and Mr.Walter Danner titled “Feasibility Study on implementing Biogas digesters at the Dagoretti Abattoirs in Nairobi, Kenya, was carried out from May 2008 in order to inform the uptake of the project.
The Dagoretti AD-plant was finally designed and implemented through the UNIDO/KIRDI/Snow Leopard GmbH and Nyongara Slaughterhouse Public-Private Partnership model. It operated successfully for seven years from its commissioning in 2009 till 2016. The biogas produced in the plant was used to generate electricity for the benefit of the slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse waste was used and disposed of in an eco-friendly way. The Dagoretti AD plant was also meant to be used for practical training purposes during the duration of the project and ongoing thereafter.
